Prompt: Panic
Another quickie before bed, this one's actually longer. Enjoy. Thinking the next one will be Rebels related....
“Oh no oh no oh no oh no” Rich’s words were like a mantra as he ran down the stairs, nearly tripping on his own feet as he panicked.
He’d been in his room, studying… It was pretty lonely only having a tutor visit every two days, but it was a must now that he… now that he’d become a demon.
Staring blankly at his book, he’d lost interest in the topic approximately two paragraphs into the history of some French king when a tapping at his window caught his attention. Confused, he turned to find another kid, his age, grinning and waving through the window at him.
He was on the second floor…
Startled, he had accidentally lashed out with his powers, and suddenly the boy’s face was gone.
It took him only a moment to leap out of his chair, and run out of the room towards the stairs.
In what seemed like entirely too much time, he’d made it outside and rounded the house. There were two other boys, one really short one and a taller brunette standing over something. He skidded to a halt, nervous all of a sudden, and slowly advanced towards them.
It was then that he heard laughter and the two boys straightened up, and parted slightly, giving Rich a view of the boy that had been at his window. He was sitting up, rubbing the back of his head, covered in scrapes, but otherwise looking fine.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” the tall brunette asked the boy on the ground. He sounded like a worried mother, head tilted in concern.
“Absolutely” the boy on the ground laughed, but remained seated.
“…” Rich finally reached them, looking down at the boy without a word; it’d been a long time since he’d been around kids his own age.
“Oh hey, sorry about scaring you!” the kid grinned at him like he HADN’T just fallen out of a tree to the ground fifteen feet below.
“… Why were you up there?” Rich’s voice was quiet, and he’d found himself frowning at how this kid could be so … calm about the whole matter. His heart was still beating a thousand times a minute, even though he tried to remain outwardly calm. He could have gotten this boy killed, and his powers could freak out at any moment.
“Well, I kept seeing you in your room when I went to school… I wanted to make sure you were okay, ‘cause I never saw you, even in the other classes!” He crossed his legs, holding his ankles. He looked so cheerful and –to be quite honest- a bit oblivious.
“I’m home-schooled. I don’t go to private schools anymore.” He kept his sentences short, wanting to flee; now that he knew the kid was okay, he didn’t want to be around the others much longer.
“*I* thought you were a ghost!” The short blonde said, proudly with his hands on his hips. The taller brunette lightly rapped the blonde on the back of his head, chiding him softly.
“My name’s Mitsuru,” suddenly, there was a hand thrust up at him, and the boy on the ground smiled brightly. “Glad to meet you”
Rich was frozen, not responding. He couldn’t, he absolutely couldn’t. These other boys would get hurt if they stayed near him. He was a demon, couldn’t they see his eyes? His aunt had said they were the eyes of a demon, of blood spilled, and that bad things would happen to those around him.
Standing, Mitsuru brushed himself off and looked at Rich, confused. “Are you okay? Did your cool powers tire you out?” His eyes were shining with curiosity, even as Rich’s eyes widened, horrified.
“What did you say?”
“Your powers! I couldn’t’ve fallen out of that tree – I’m really good at climbing trees, you know. I rescued this cat, once, and—“
“--You… you must’ve just hit your head. I don’t know what you mean!” His mind was screaming for him to run, this was unreal, maybe it was a trick…
“Maan, if I had powers like you did, I’d be so happy!” Mitsuru was smiling right at him, not seeming to care that his hair was bright blonde, and that his eyes…
“… Are you serious? You’re not… afraid of me?”
That earned him a raised eyebrow from Mitsuru, and a confused sound from both of his friends.
“Why? You seem perfectly nice”
“But…”
“Hey, can we come inside?”
“…Huh?”
“Well, the scrape on my knee’s starting to bleed a little, and I wanted to clean it up a bit.” Rich was amazed that even as Mitsuru said that, he was still smiling.
“S-Sure…”
The beginning of a beeyootiful friendship!
