I think iTunes is pretty finnicky...I have heard of this happening, and the only way to fix it was to re-install itunes.
You might try "deauthorizing audible content" and then re-authorizing to see if that fixes it.
Once my ipod stopped playing any music I purchased...it was quite weird. I just had to reinstall itunes.
So, in short, re-install...just make sure you know where itunes is storing your music so you don't "lose it"...it won't get deleted or anything if you uninstall, and it will be saved on the ipod as well...but just for sanity's sake.
I'm sorry things are crazyyy...I got my new car on Friday, maybe we can hang out sometime soon and watch movies or something. :)
